Can you make a decent living as a freelance writer?

Freelancing isn’t meant to be free, although it certainly represents a form of free enterprise.

As a self-employed freelance writer, can you actually earn a reasonable income? Sure, you might hit it big with a banner headline story or a best-selling book, but those trophies may take time to arrive.

In the meantime, is it possible for a beat writer, blogger, columnist, features reporter, novelist, poet, stringer or web writer to make enough to make ends meet?

Ask my friend and writing colleague, Amy Brantley, who writes “Freelancin’ for $1,000 a Week.” Better yet, check in with her blog periodically to see how she's doing at it. Want to see authentic numbers for a working writer? Follow Amy's posts.

It’s possible to earn real money from writing. However, a fine future in freelancing depends on a few key factors, as I’ve found firsthand during more than three decades of self-employment as a wordsmith.

Here’s the short list:

  1. Personality
  2. Contacts
  3. Experience
  4. Portfolio
  5. Networking
  6. Bookkeeping

  2. I certainly have yet to come close to Amy's success. Hoping my fiction does well. Good reviews... slow but steady sales. Marketing is the dog.

  3. Very nice. I'd love to get the emails, but I never check my Gmail or reader, and all you offer is joining in reader :(
