Busting blogger’s block: Jump in with a joke, or tell a tale

10 ways to blog when you don’t feel like blogging

4. Find a funny story or an amusing anecdote.

Memories, both mirthful and mindful, can make marvelous material for blog posts.

Have you heard a clever story or a particularly clever quip?

Can you think of an insight-producing incident? Or might you recount a telling experience that reveals something important or intriguing about human nature? How about a hard-knocks life or career lesson you learned – or saw someone learn?

Perhaps you can peruse your own memory and come up with a hilarious "Most Embarrassing Moments" story or a "You Won't Believe This" anecdote.

Pull out the punches … or the punch line. Maybe it’s blog fodder, after all.

Busting blogger’s block: Catch a cartoon

10 ways to blog when you don’t feel like blogging

3. Clip up a cartoon.

Clever and comical images with funny one-liners or words of wisdom can become fabulous fodder for blog posts. Most readers are visually oriented folks, anyway, so these sorts of entries are likely to be favorites.

Who knows? Blog visitors and followers alike may forward the post links to others, if they enjoy what they have seen

Here’s the caveat.

Copyright laws protect most current cartoons and comic strips. Even older works may still be covered, so it pays to check before posting. Bloggers can tell horror stories of the possible repercussions of republishing copyrighted material without permission.

Just because a cartoon has been shared and re-shared on Facebook, Google Plus, or another social networking site does not mean it is free for publication.

Public domain works are considered fair game. Royalty-free and copyright-expired pieces are generally safe.

Clever bloggers store up suitable stuff constantly, saving free-to-use images and appropriate taglines for use when they face a creativity gap or need a quick post.

Consider these examples of cartoon-inspired blog posts:

Busting blogger’s block: Rein in a roundup

10 ways to blog when you don’t feel like blogging

2. Link up topical titles.

Here’s a simple way to break through writer’s block and put up a timely blog post. Pick a timely or evergreen topic, and gather a bunch of title links to well-written articles on the subject.

I’ve published dozens of roundups of related articles, particularly at Practically at Home. Often, I include title-and-teaser links to pieces by fellow writers. Usually, I’ll toss in one or two of my own titles as well, if my content library offers related material.

Here are a few examples:

Roundup blog posts are handy and popular.

Readers look to these posts as helpful sources of material, if the entries fit their search queries.

Web writers tend to appreciate the extra publicity and the web-links. Some may even return the favor some day.

In short, everyone wins with a link list post, as long as it’s short and subject-based.

Busting blogger’s block: Find a photo

10 ways to blog when you don’t feel like blogging

1. Find a photo

Does your blogging engine need a boost to set your creativity in motion? Why not find a photo that intrigues you?

Pick a pretty painting, a quirky sketch, or a candid shot.

What do you see? Does anything in the image remind you of a personal experience, an important issue, or an area in which you might offer exceptional expertise to your blog readers?

Plenty of bloggers peruse public domain pictures and royalty-free artwork, scouring images for writing inspiration. Others snap their own photos, saving them for this express purpose.

Lots of us do a bit of both.

See? Your thought processes are already in motion.

Just take a look. Write what you observe, how you feel, or what you know. It sure beats the classic high school creative writing assignment, when a teacher would place a paperclip, a rock, or an apple on a table and ask for 100 words about it.
