How many times have we heard a superior-sounding voice bark
out this phrase?
“If you think you’re gonna get away with that, you’ve got another thing
coming.”
Really? What’s coming, a package in the mail? How about Dr.
Seuss’ Thing 1 and Thing 2?
But that’s not really what the hollering scolder has in
mind, is it?
Nope. What the bossy one really means is this:
You’ve got another think coming.
OK, it’s sort of a slang expression. But carries pretty much
the same sentiment as this dreaded command most of us recall from childhood:
Go to your room and think about what you just did.
It has a lot to do with thinking before speaking or acting.
And don’t get me started about “get,” “got,” and “gotta.” I’ll
cover that in another post one day. You might say that will be another thing
coming. Think about it.
