50 Mistreated Words and Desecrated Phrases: At his beckon call



This desecrated phrase sticks in my craw. It ruffles my feathers. A person cannot be at someone’s beckon call.

OK, maybe he’s a bully and likes to boss people around. Maybe he beckons or calls. Perhaps he beckons and calls. But no one is ever at his beckon call.

If someone stands ready to do his bidding at a moment’s notice, one might say that person is at his beck and call.

But then it may be time to take flight.
