A to Z Writing: Deadlines Deliver Determination

Do you detest deadlines, or do you deem them delightful?

OK, maybe deadlines are not exactly delightful, but they do stop us from stalling. Even procrastinators tend to perform better with the boundaries imposed by drop-dead dates.

I love deadlines.

Maybe it’s the rush of racing to beat the clock. Perhaps it’s the honor of chasing glory before the proverbial hourglass runs out. Or it could simply be an immunity to panic, acquired by surviving journalism school boot camp.

For whatever reason, deadlines keep me on track.

Are you a deliberate writer, planning ahead and setting up stories long before they are due? Or do you race to create content in the nick of time?

Either way, deadlines need not be deadly.

Try these deadline-themed quotations on for size:

Deadlines are meant to be broken. And I just keep breaking them.
Sarah McLaughlin, recording artist

Be able to meet any deadline, even if your work is done less well than it would be if you had all the time you would have preferred.
Marilyn vos Savant, columnist

A goal is a dream with a deadline.
Napoleon Hill, writer

Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.
Don Marquis, poet

I am one of those people who thrive on deadlines, nothing brings on inspiration more readily than desperation.
Harry Shearer, actor

One forges one's style on the terrible anvil of daily deadlines.
Emile Zola, novelist

That’s all for today, folks. Deadlines are calling!

  4. I have a love-hate relationship with deadlines. Love them because I can pace my time; hate them because there isn't enough time :)

  5. Deadlines are not a problem with me so I have had no real rush nor frenzy to meet one with regard to writing. I am not fond of procrastinating thus I tend to ever be a step ahead.
